FAQ

Traditionally, natural gas distribution companies such as Consumers Energy and DTE Gas Company have provided all of the services required to bring natural gas to your home. For example, not only would these companies purchase the natural gas supply for your home or business, deliver it, and charge you for this service, they also make sure the delivery system, the network of gas pipelines, is well-maintained and operates safely. If there are any problems, they show up and fix them. With the Gas Customer Choice Program, you have the freedom to shop around for the best deal that suits your individual household or business needs by selecting someone else, an alternative natural gas supplier, to buy your natural gas from rather than the Utility. It’s the power of choice. If you choose Ardent Natural Gas, as your preferred alternative natural gas supplier, Ardent will deliver your gas to your Utility, Consumers Energy or DTE Gas Company, and they will then deliver it to you through their system. Ardent Natural Gas’ name and phone number will appear on your Consumers Energy or DTE Gas Company bill along with your Ardent Natural Gas rate. Whatever choice you make, Consumers Energy or DTE Gas Company will still deliver the natural gas to your home or business. They will still make sure the delivery system is maintained and will still fix problems that might occur.
No. Your gas charge with Consumers Energy or DTE Gas Company is called the Gas Cost Recovery charge and is a pass-through of Consumers Energy or DTE Gas Company’s natural gas costs including supply, transportation and storage costs. There is no profit margin built into that cost. Consumers Energy or DTE Gas Company’s profit comes from their Gas Distribution Charge and Customer Charge which you will pay to Consumers Energy or DTE Gas Company whether or not you take advantage of the Gas Customer Choice Program.
